The formelle dei Mesi, now kept in the Museo della Cattedrale di Ferrara, decorated the Porta dei Pellegrini, or Porta dei Mesi, once located on the southern side of the Cathedral, at one of the main access of the city. Sculpted in the first decades of the thirteenth century by the mysterious Maestro dei Mesi, an anonymous artist among the greatest sculptors of the XIII century, they represent the months of the year identified through characteristic agricultural activity of the period. With his intense naturalism and great technical ability, the Maestro dei Mesi gives us a very realistic view of the life of time
The eight formelle survived have inclined support surfaces and the base floor has a curved pattern, this supports the thesis of their original location in the intrados of the arch in bottom of the protiro portal, structured on two levels and surmounted by another arch covered with sloped roof. The door was closed in 1717 and the subsequent demolition in 1736 has bring about the loss of some formelle and the uncertainty about their disposition
The magnets are the result of the three-dimensional survey of the original item done with laser scanner and of the subsequent 3D models elaboration
